Bio
Toufik Medjamia is a visual artist born in Algiers in 1978. He has lived and worked in Marseille since 1994 and studied at the École Supérieure d'Art d'Aix-en-Provence, where he received a DNAP [B.A.] in 2005 and a DNSEP [M.F.A.] in 2007.
His practice moves across drawing, paper cut-outs, sculpture, installation, photography, video, objects and code. Rather than working from a fixed medium, he develops each project through the forms and tools required by the question at hand.
His work has been exhibited internationally since 2006, including the Printemps de l'Art Contemporain in Marseille (2017), the Kinshasa Biennale (2014), the OASE WAhh Festival in Nijmegen (2013), the Casablanca Biennale and I.F.A.A. Art Platform in Brussels (both 2012), and Musée Estrine in Saint-Rémy-de-Provence (2009). He has also exhibited regularly in the United States with ThinkArt Salon, Chicago, and was a resident at Ifitry, Contemporary Art Centre of Essaouira.
Between 2004 and 2010, a significant part of his work dealt directly with colonial representation, human exhibitions and coloniality. Works such as "Interdit de nourrir les indigènes" (2008) belong to this period. The questions raised there — around representation, categorisation, hierarchy and the construction of supposedly objective realities — continue to run through his work.
Other bodies of work approach related questions through material and form, among them "Arbres rationalisés", an ongoing project begun in 2017: living trees reduced to a rational form, partly denatured and displaced, carved into the shape of useful things — objects to be used, consumed, burned.
"Anarchiv" (2026) extends these concerns into the organisation and circulation of the work itself. It is the system behind toofik.com: a relational archive in which fragments are linked through connections, proximities and tensions, rather than fixed categories or chronology. The site is both the public form of the archive and an evolving work in itself.
