Y'a Bon !

Y’a bon combines advertising imagery and printed objects from different periods: posters, packaging, collectible cards, postcards, blotters, and advertisements from magazines and newspapers. These materials share the commercial use of racist caricatures of Black people, from early “coon” imagery to contemporary advertising campaigns, including examples from the 1990s.
The still images are arranged chronologically and then assembled into a video sequence, turning their historical progression into a temporal continuum. Temporal scanning then compresses different moments from this sequence into a single image, where the representations overlap and interweave.
This compression reveals not so much a succession as a persistence: the media, products, and contexts change, while the same caricatural constructions continue to circulate through commercial and advertising culture across several generations.
